Recently I’ve been toying with the idea of taking some of my vector illustrations and turning them into greeting cards. It’s kind of one of those ideas that I’ve always stored in the back of my brain, but never actually did anything with. (If it’s one thing I’m really ridiculously good at, it’s procrastinating.) Seeing that it’s the holiday season, a couple of weeks ago I decided that now would be as good a time as any to try my hand at making some cards. After thorough research (aka using Google to look up a zillion different printing companies), I decided to give Overnight Prints a go. Their prices seemed very good, and I liked that I could place a small order and not have to order 100+ cards that might not even turn out the way I like.
Since the holidays are approaching so fast (and is it just me or do they seem to arrive sooner and sooner every year?), instead of taking the time to create an all-new illustration (I’ll save that for next year … maybe), I used one that I already had, modified it to fit the greeting card template, crossed my fingers, and ordered some cards. When I placed my order there was a sale for 50% off of greeting cards, so I spent some of the money I’d saved on red envelopes instead of white. (I’m wild and crazy like that.)
The cards arrived via UPS yesterday, and I have to say I’m pretty satisfied with the way they came out.
Now that I’ve actually printed up a batch of cards, I suppose I might actually venture out and try my hand at creating some other cards (i.e. birthday cards, invitations, thank you cards, etc.) to sell in the future. It’s always fun to see work you create printed up, even if it’s just printed up for my own use. And since we’re on the subject of Christmas, it’s always kind of been one of my favorite holidays, and I think that’s partially because I was born three days before Christmas. For me, Christmas season always meant birthday season as well. I’d spend the whole year waiting for December, because it meant Christmas and my birthday were finally coming around. As a result, I kind of love all things Christmas, including Christmas music, even the cheesy stuff (except for “Christmas Shoes” and Mannheim Steamroller — I do have my limits). I have a massive collection of Christmas music on my external hard drive, and since it’s the holiday season, I thought maybe I’d share a few of my favorite songs with you. Plus, well, okay, I figure this will be a way to get me to write on my oft-neglected (but pretty!) blog more.
So I’ll leave you with a link to Guster’s “¿Donde Esta Santa Claus?” It’s catchy and fun and makes me happy. Not to mention Guster is one of my favorite bands anyway.
