Baker Beach

On Thursday afternoon, just before it started to rain.

On a semi-related note, I’ve been shooting recently with a Canon 24-70mm lens.  I’ve always read lots and lots of great things about this lens, but I wasn’t sure how much I, personally, would use it.  I always tended to like to shoot either at the wide end (or ultra wide or super fisheye ultra wide) or the telephoto end (hello, super telephoto lens that gives me sore arms the day after I lug it around), but after using this lens for myself, I can honestly say that it is just as awesome as everyone says it is.  And maybe, quite possibly, the reason why I never shot much in the 24-70mm range is because I never actually had a lens that fit into that category.  Maybe.

In closing, Baker Beach is pretty, the Golden Gate Bridge always looks good, even in the rain, and Canon’s 24-70mm lens is the bee’s knees.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like …

Recently I’ve been toying with the idea of taking some of my vector illustrations and turning them into greeting cards.  It’s kind of one of those ideas that I’ve always stored in the back of my brain, but never actually did anything with.  (If it’s one thing I’m really ridiculously good at, it’s procrastinating.)  Seeing that it’s the holiday season, a couple of weeks ago I decided that now would be as good a time as any to try my hand at making some cards.  After thorough research (aka using Google to look up a zillion different printing companies), I decided to give Overnight Prints a go.   Their prices seemed very good, and I liked that I could place a small order and not have to order 100+ cards that might not even turn out the way I like.

Since the holidays are approaching so fast (and is it just me or do they seem to arrive sooner and sooner every year?), instead of taking the time to create an all-new illustration (I’ll save that for next year … maybe), I used one that I already had, modified it to fit the greeting card template, crossed my fingers, and ordered some cards.  When I placed my order there was a sale for 50% off of greeting cards, so I spent some of the money I’d saved on red envelopes instead of white.  (I’m wild and crazy like that.)

The cards arrived via UPS yesterday, and I have to say I’m pretty satisfied with the way they came out.

Now that I’ve actually printed up a batch of cards, I suppose I might actually venture out and try my hand at creating some other cards (i.e. birthday cards, invitations, thank you cards, etc.)  to sell in the future.  It’s always fun to see work you create printed up, even if it’s just printed up for my own use.  Of course if you’re in need of some greeting cards and want your own individual design, feel free to let me know.  I’m happy to help.

And since we’re on the subject of Christmas, it’s always kind of been one of my favorite holidays, and I think that’s partially because I was born three days before Christmas.  For me, Christmas season always meant birthday season as well.  I’d spend the whole year waiting for December, because it meant Christmas and my birthday were finally coming around.  As a result, I kind of love all things Christmas, including Christmas music, even the cheesy stuff (except for “Christmas Shoes” and Mannheim Steamroller — I do have my limits).  I have a massive collection of Christmas music on my external hard drive, and since it’s the holiday season, I thought maybe I’d share a few of my favorite songs with you.  Plus, well, okay, I figure this will be a way to get me to write on my oft-neglected (but pretty!) blog more.

So I’ll leave you with a link to Guster’s “¿Donde Esta Santa Claus?”  It’s catchy and fun and makes me happy.  Not to mention Guster is one of my favorite bands anyway.  While you’re at it, be sure to check out their new album Easy Wonderful.  Then you can blast “Do You Love Me” in the car and sing along with it at the top of your lungs just like I do.

National League Champions

I realize I’ve been neglecting my blog, but I have a good reason!  The San Francisco Giants, my absolute favorite baseball team, the team I’ve loved with all of my heart since I was eight-years-old and Will Clark was dazzling Candlestick crowds with his sweet swing, are not only in the playoffs, but have just won the National League pennant.  Yes, my beloved Giants are in the World Series.

That’s one of those things that I have to say, pause, reflect, and say again just to make myself believe it’s actually true.

The San Francisco Giants are playing in the World Series, which starts on Wednesday at AT&T Park.  It almost seems like fate that the National League wins the All-Star Game for the first time in forever and gets home field advantage in the World Series (an idea that I think is silly still) the year the Giants make it all the way to the end.

I’m so very proud of this team and so very excited about what’s to come.

I took the above photo at game three of the NLCS last week.  I’m not sure if I’ll be able to swing World Series tickets, as they’re just slightly expensive, but trust that if I don’t make it to the park, I’ll be hooting and hollering as I watch at home.  Go get ‘em, Giants.  Time to introduce torture baseball to the folks in Texas.

Summer in the City

Even when the Giants don’t win (although it’s obviously much more fun when they do win), it’s still awfully nice to spend a summer afternoon at the ballpark.
